GBS Survivors

This page is dedicated to the children that have survived their battle with Group B Strep. Many of them have a long road ahead.

Please also keep these children and their families in your prayers.

Tony Huber

Born 8/6/97. Has had pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis caused by GBS. He has severe developmental delays and no language skills.

He is just beginning to learn sign language.

Carissa Alisa Woytach

Born September 30, 1994. When she was born, Carissa weighed one pound 12 ounces and was 13 1/2 inches long. She was born at just 26 weeks gestation. Carissa spent 75 days in the NICU, and December 14th, 1994, Bobbi and Jeffrey got to bring their little girl home. Carissa tested positive to GBS shortly after birth, and her doctors administered antibiotics right away. Bobbi also had a couple of medical scares after Carissa was born, but both are doing just fine.

Carissa just turned 8, and is doing wonderful!

Aaron Cohen

Born January 22, 1992. Aaron never really pinked up after he was born and the doctors knew there was something wrong and brought in a neonatologist. Overnight he went downhill and was transferred to a level 3 hospital while on the respirator. It took doctors 4 days to figure out it was GBS. He had persistent fetal Circulation Syndrome, but began to turn around and after 2 weeks was able to come home! Aaron has ADHD, and other disorders and is in special ed and is doing very well. His parents are VERY proud of him!!!

?This is Aaron today!

Isaac Towner

?

Born May 15th, 2001. Within hours of his birth, Isaac began grunting and was placed in an incubator with oxygen. In 24 hours Isaac deteriorated, was placed on a ventilator and transferred to a high level hospital and placed in the NICU. His lungs collapsed and his parents were told he had pneumonia and it was presumed sepsis. Isaac found the will to live, and made an amazing recovery, and came home just 2 weeks later. It was later discovered that Isaac experienced problems due to GBS.

Isaac today is a happy and brave boy, but has respiratory problems and developmental delays.

Noah Tester

Noah's mother Traci was diagnosed GBS+when she was tested for a UTI when she was 6 wks pregnant. She was treated then with antibiotics and wasn't retested until 37 wks. She was still GBS positive. Traci went into labor the day before her due date. When she got to the hospital the nurses had all been informed by the OB on call that she was GBS+, so they were ready. She was hooked up to IV as soon as she was admitted. She received 3 bags of IV antibiotics before Noah was born. After he was born they sent the placenta to the lab to be tested for GBS. Her placenta was infected with it, also. Because of the actions of the hospital and her doctor, Noah is a happy and healthy 3 month old.

Gabrielle Crews?

Born 8/1/2000

Gabrielle was 3 1/2 weeks old when she got sick from GBS. Her parents Todd and Elda were told that Gabrielle wouldn't live and if by chance of a miracle she did live, she would be in a vegetative state.

Thanks to lots of prayer and a miracle from God above, Gabrielle did live. She was on medications for the first year of her life to control her seizures. Today Gabrielle is walking with a walker, saying 5-10 words, and is a bundle of joy! She is receiving 6 therapies per week. Her parents thank God each and every day that Gabrielle is with them and continuing to heal!

Olivia Elliott

Born June 20, 2002

Maureen? and her husband brought their beautiful daughter Olivia into the world at 2 pm June 20th, 2002, after a long labor and only one dose of antibiotics. She was small, 6 lbs., 14 oz., but loud. The midwife gave her a near perfect apgar. On June 21 at 10:30 p.m. Maureen was happily nestled into bed with Olivia and after feeding her and burping her she sensed something wasn't right and as she lowered her in my arms and looked into her face she was going blue and her eyes looked funny. She started screaming for her husband. Her neighbor who is a nurse came over and tried to find a pulse. After several minutes Olivia started to breath. Olivia was rushed to the hospital where they fought to have her admitted, but they finally admitted her to the PICU where she spent the next week on antibiotics. Today she is showing no signs of her fight with GBS.

John Marc Hinds

Born October 16th, 1996

John Marc was born with GBS, and had a long battle. He is now happy and healthy. The only side effects that he has is ADD, but no other complications.

He is dearly loved by his parents and look forward to seeing him grow up to be the sweet young man they adore!

Nathaniel Brooks Frederick?

Born January 25, 2001

Nathan was born healthy, until his first well baby check up, it was noticed that his leg wouldn't extend completely, and he cried if it was done for him. After many tests, it was discovered that due to late onset GBS, he contracted Osteomylitis which is a bone infection which in fact had caused moth eaten holes and clear spots on Nathan's bones. Nathan was on antibiotics for a month, and has healed quite nicely. He is now a happy, healthy little boy.

Frankie Brigance

Born Dec 18, 1991-

Frankie was born and within minutes he began having problems breathing. He was rushed off and 4 hours later, the doctors asked permission to do a spinal tap. Both of his lungs had collapsed, he had a diaphramatic hernia...(his liver ruptured through his diaphraghm and lodged under his collar bone). It was diagnosed that GBS was the cause of all of Frankie's problems. After surgeory to correct all of the problems, Frankie is 11 and doing just fine! He is on the local speed skating team, and is happy and healthy!

Tessa Heer

Born July 22, 2003.

Due to a hospital "mix up" Tess's mother Marcia did not receive any antibiotics during labor even though she had tested positive for GBS at 37 weeks. After the mistake was discovered, Tess was taken for blood work. Her labs showed extremely high white cell counts & she was admitted to the NICU. Tessa stayed there on antibiotics for 7 days.

Right now she is happy and healthy little girl.

Her mother is taking her daughters GBS experience and making it a positive thing! She will be distributing Hug Bags to her local PICU, and spreading the word about GBS! Thank you Marcia!

Ethan John Weesner

Born April 16th, 2005

Ethan's mother Nicole had received all of her antibiotics because she had tested positive for Group B Strep. When Ethan was born he was having trouble breathing and was taken to the NICU. Ethan developed pneumonia from the large amount of amniotic fluid that he aspirated on and was diagnosed with Group B strep. The Group B strep caused him to have sepsis and he was in kidney failure his first day of life. Ethan was placed on a ventilator and they had so much trouble keeping his blood pressure high enough for him to survive. Ethan was placed on three types of blood pressure including epinephrine, which is used for patients in cardiac arrest. There were many prayers going up to the heavens for my small angel. In a 24 hour period he was taken off all medication and off the ventilator straight to room air. Ethan's life is a miralce and we cherish him everyday.Ethan is a happy and healthy two month old.
